Fall is right around the corner, the leaves are already beginning to fall and our evenings are cool...it's
my favorite season for so many reasons and around here it's the PERFECT time of year
for your portrait session!
One of the most asked questions I get asked is, “What should we wear?” It really is a tough choice, I know! We’re
heading to the beach in a few days and are having our family portraits done
while we’re there…I STILL haven’t chosen the last pieces of our outfits!!! It’s just a tad overwhelming (understatement
maybe?)
While I may not be able to personally select your wardrobe, what I can do it offer up a few suggestions!
First of all you need to decide what look you are going for.
-Do you love color like me?
-Do you want a more sophisticated look?
-Are you a family of hipsters?
-Do you want a look that screams black tie affair?
There is no right or wrong answer to this question!! Once you've made up your mind the decision
making gets a little bit easier.
I always try to select one outfit and then coordinate the rest of the family
around that outfit!!
The BEST advice you can get is to COORDINATE!! Don’t go overboard and get too
matchy matchy!
Find a common color (any color) and work it into each outfit, this is great way to
tie your look together!
If you’re having trouble choosing a color palette check out:
DesignSeeds.
Design Seeds is an awesome sight that allows you to search for and find
fabulous color palettes that can be used as inspiration for your portrait
session.
Use the cool weather as a reason to LAYER!! Layering adds fantastic
texture to your portraits and also provides a way to make simple changes in
your wardrobe for more variety without having to completely change clothes. Think
scarves, cardigans, jackets, vests, sweaters over button up shirts, short
sleeve shirts over long sleeve shirts…Layer, layer, layer and then layer some
more J .
Don’t be afraid of prints!! ! Plaid, stripes, polka dots, hounds tooth, argyle…don’t
overdo it, but prints can add a splash of fun to your portraits! Think bow-ties
or scarves with a fun print- perfect to add a POP to your portraits!
Dress comfortably! This should go without saying, but I’ll say
it anyway!! Don’t wear anything uncomfortable or unflattering. You want to LOVE
your photos and ENJOY your session- how will you enjoy a session in an
uncomfortable skirt or shoes?? Wear clothes that you’re comfortable in. Being comfy will do wonders for your images!

Now for a little of what NOT to wear!!
As I've already said No Matchy-Matchy!! This means don’t put everyone in white
shirts ;)
Remember when I said don’t overdo the print!! Don’t put two
family members in different prints that compete with each other!
Steer clear of sneakers! Unless you are going for a casual/athletic look. Please don't neglect your shoes- you don't want to get to your session and say "can you crop out our shoes"
Do not wear shirts with writing or logos on them- it will be very
distracting in your portraits!! After all we want people looking at YOU not
your shirt!
Here are a few links of clothing stores I always like to check out when planning our family portraits!!
